01 / The Problem

Shopify Plus looks like a reasonable choice until you total up what it actually costs. The subscription starts at €2,000 a month, transaction fees take another cut of every sale, and connecting it to local systems - accounting, warehouse, ERP - is either limited or needs extra paid connectors. The deeper problem isn't the cost, it's control: the platform's terms, update schedule, and feature roadmap are the vendor's to decide, not yours. The longer you stay, the more expensive leaving becomes.

02 / Our Approach

Magento 2 is open-source, so the code is yours rather than something you rent. We use it as the engine behind the shop and pair it with a stripped-down, modern storefront that loads far faster than a standard Magento theme. Heavy pages are cached and served almost instantly, and frequently used data is kept ready in memory so the database isn't overloaded on busy days. The result handles campaign traffic without anyone prepping servers by hand.

03 / The Result

Pages load in under two seconds on mobile, even when traffic is ten times normal. The €2,000+/month SaaS subscription goes away - you pay for hosting instead, a fraction of the cost. The bigger win is control: when a business process changes, you change the code instead of waiting to see whether the vendor adds the feature. ERP and point-of-sale connect directly, so stock and orders stay in sync.

Why this matters:

  • The code is yours - not a subscription you lose access to if you stop paying.
  • No monthly SaaS fee - you pay for hosting, not a platform licence.
  • Faster pages mean better ad quality scores on Google Shopping.
  • ERP and point-of-sale connect directly, with no extra middleware subscription.
  • Busy campaign days are handled automatically, with no manual server prep.

04 / Challenges

The biggest technical challenge was moving the data from Shopify - products, customer history, and orders - without gaps and without taking the store offline. We ran both systems in parallel for a while, with orders synced across automatically. Keeping the web addresses intact and setting up correct redirects was critical so the rankings built up in Google weren't lost - every position dropped costs money, so we let Google index the new structure before retiring the old one.
